EUGENE, Ore. – University of Louisville track and field athlete Brion Stephens won the USATF U20 national championship in the men's high jump at Hayward Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win clinches Stephens' spot on the national team for the 2023 Pan Am U20 Championships which are set to take place from Aug. 4-6 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
The Indianapolis, Ind. native cleared a height of 2.15m (7-0.5) in Eugene to claim first place and cement himself as the third Louisville student athlete in school history to win an event at the USATF U20 Championships.
Stephens made a strong impression during his freshman season with the Cardinals, earning second team indoor All-American honors in the high jump while also qualifying for the NCAA East Region Preliminaries in the event.
He set new indoor and outdoor Louisville freshman records in the high jump earlier this year, recording marks of 2.21m (7-3) at the ACC Indoor Championships and 2.22m (7-3.25) at the ACC Outdoor Championships on his way to a pair of conference runner-up finishes.
Stephens also found success on the national stage during his time in high school, winning the 2022 New Balance Nationals indoor title in the high jump while competing for Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.
