Jeff Brohm Provides Summer Update; Addresses Signing of T.J. Capers
July 13, 2023 | Football
Entering his 10th season, Brohm has a long tradition of coaching successful offensive football but linebacker T.J. Capers was the highlight of the Thursday's press briefing. Capers signed early this week and arrived on campus as the third-highest rated recruit in school history.
"We're excited about TJ Capers and we're fired up to get him here," Brohm said in a Thursday news conference. "IÂ think he can be an outstanding football player for us."
A five-star and top-10 prospect in the 2024 class before ranking him as a top-20 edge linebacker for the 2023 class, Brohm said Capers is rehabbing from a knee injury suffered at the end of last year.Â
"Now, the reality is, he still should be going into senior year of high school," Brohm said. "So, there is going to be a learning curve. He hasn't been here training with us. He just arrived late Tuesday night, early Wednesday morning. There's a lot to learn.
"He had a knee injury at the end of the year that he's still rehabbing. So, there's just a lot of things. We're not going to have high expectations early on for him. We want to make sure he feels comfortable with what he's doing, he gets healthy and we get him on the field when he's ready."
An All-American Bowl participant, Capers was rated a top 50 prospect nationally. He's tabbed the No. 14 player in the state of Florida and the No. 5 outside linebacker in the nation.
Â
A 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker, Capers recorded 93 tackles, 7.0 sacks and 11 quarterback pressures over the last two seasons. As a junior, Capers was credited with 40 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss leading the Explorers to a No. 23 national ranking.
Â
As a sophomore, he was a Miami Herald All-Dade 8-6A first-team selection after recording 53 tackles, two forced fumbles and two sacks.
Â
During his rookie season, he helped Miami Columbus win the Tri-County Football Championship Series and then he helped the Explorers win their first-ever state basketball championship in 2022.
Â
Capers chose Louisville over offers from Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Miami, Florida State and other top-rated programs.
