Cards fall 4-0 to host third-ranked Ohio State in NCAA Regional Final
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 4-0 to third-ranked Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon at Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
Â
The 37th-ranked Cardinals finish the 2023 season with a 17-12 overall record after earning their second straight NCAA tournament bid and reaching the regional final for the first time since 2017.
"Tough day today," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "Ohio State played better than us and we didn't play as well as we could have - which is not a great combination. But Ohio State deserves all the credit, they are a very good team. I'm really proud of the guys for the season as a whole. We had some good wins and took some losses that we felt could have gone our way, but the guys stayed tough and kept going. We got to the NCAA tournament and won the first round. I'm so proud of them for achieving that and we will continue to build for the future."
Â
Ohio State (31-2) took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three to start the match.
Â
In singles action, the Buckeyes extended their lead on court five when No. 41-ranked Alexander Bernard topped freshman Andre' Steinbach 6-0, 6-2. Ohio State added to its lead at the four-spot when No. 34-ranked James Trotter picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over junior Matthew Fung. The match was decided on court three as 22nd-ranked JJ Tracy defeated Fabien Salle 6-2, 6-3.
Â
While Louisville has concluded its team season, the Cardinals will be represented in the NCAA singles championship by Etienne Donnet while Salle and Natan Rodrigues will compete in doubles. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 18-20.
