Cardinals Welcome #11/14 North Carolina for Weekend Tilt
February 03, 2023 | Women's Basketball
This will be the second-straight ranked opponent they will play at home
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's basketball team is set to take on another ranked opponent as #11/14 North Carolina comes to the KFC Yum! Center this weekend. The Tar Heels will be the second-straight ranked opponent the Cards will face at home and the fifth ranked opponent they will go up against so far this season. Sunday's matchup will start at 12 p.m. ET and it will be aired nationally on ESPN2.
Sunday's game will be the annual Pink/Play4Kay Game as the Cardinals continue the fight against breast cancer and honor local breast cancer survivors throughout the game.
The Cardinals are coming off their bye week and their most recent game was a 79-67 win on the road over Syracuse on January 29. The win sealed the season sweep over the Orange and it is the second season sweep so far this season as the Cardinals have also defeated Pitt twice this year. Louisville shifted the starting lineup as Nyla Harris and Norika Konno both got their first career starts and Mykasa Robinson was put into the starting five for the fourth time this season.
Harris had a breakout game for the Cards as she led the team with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, with a career high three blocks to go with six rebounds. It was the most points scored by a Louisville freshman since 2021. Robinson also had one of the best games of her career with a career-best 12 assists, tied a career high with five steals to go with seven points, seven rebounds and zero turnovers. She is the only player in the country with 12 or more assists and zero turnovers in a single game this season. The 12 assists were the most by a Louisville player since Mariya Moore had 12 in a game against Charleston in 2015. Liz Dixon surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career against the Orange and she is the second Cardinal to do so this season.
Sunday's matchup will pit one of the best shooting teams in the conference against one of the best shooting defense teams in the league. The Cardinals are second in the ACC with a .466 field goal percentage as a team this season and they lead the ACC with a .350 shooting percentage from behind the arc. North Carolina is fourth in the ACC in field goal percentage defense, as it limits opponents to a .357 field goal percentage. Louisville is ranked third in scoring, averaging 74.5 points per game while North Carolina is fifth in scoring defense, limiting opponents to 57.9 points per game.

ABOUT THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina is 17-5 on the season and 8-3 in ACC play. They defeated Virginia at home 73-62 on Thursday before Sunday's matchup with the Cardinals. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 11 in the AP poll and No. 14 in the coaches poll. North Carolina is riding an eight-game winning streak, the longest active streak by an ACC team heading into this weekend's games. Sunday's matchup will pair two of the top scorers in the ACC against each other. Hailey Van Lith is third in the ACC with 19.3 points per game and Deja Kelly ranks fifth with 16.0 points per game. The pair also get other players involved as Kelly is eighth in the league with 3.5 assists per game and Van Lith is ninth, also with 3.5 assists per game. The Tar Heels rank fifth in the ACC in scoring defense as they allow 59.7 points per game and the Cardinals are third in the league in scoring offense with 74.5 points per game.
Series History - This will be the 13th meeting all time between the two schools as the series dates back to the 1984-85 season. Louisville holds the all-time series lead 8-4 and are 4-0 in games played in Louisville. The Cardinals have won eight of the last nine games against North Carolina. Louisville is 8-2 against the Tar Heels under Jeff Walz's tenure.
Last Meeting (Feb. 17, 2022) - Kennedy Todd-Williams knocked down the go-ahead free throws with 16.2 seconds left and No. 23 North Carolina survived Louisville's two final-play missed shots to upset the third-ranked Cardinals 66-65 on Thursday night. Todd-Williams finished with 19 points to lead the Tar Heels (20-5, 10-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), who ended an eight-game skid against the Cardinals in dramatic fashion. After Todd-Williams' free throws, Louisville called timeout to set up a final play. As the clock dwindled down, Kianna Smith hit the front rim on a 3-point attempt. Chelsie Hall managed to grab the rebound and toss the ball up as she fell to the court. The ball sat on the rim before slowly rolling off as the horn sounded. Kelly had 18 points for UNC, which shot just 38% and made only 5 of 19 3-pointers. But the Tar Heels hung around, erasing a 10-point first-half deficit and using a 42-32 rebounding advantage - including 13-5 on the offensive glass - to stay within arm's reach of the Cardinals. Hailey Van Lith scored 17 points to lead Louisville (22-3, 13-2), which had won all eight meetings with UNC since joining the ACC for the 2014-15 season. Olivia Cochran added 12 of her 14 points after halftime.
