December 08, 2023 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- University of Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm has achieved a lot in his first season back at his alma mater.
Hired one year ago today, Brohm has seen the Cards win 10 games, play for an Atlantic Coast Conference title, and advance to the school's first appearance in the Holiday Bowl.
"We're definitely excited to play University Southern California in the Holiday Bowl," Brohm said. "I think our team understands you play a brand team like that, that it'll be an exciting game and they have a ton of talent and well coached and I think our guys be fired up to go out there and play. It's unfortunate we didn't finish the season exactly the way we wanted and we have to get back to playing our brand of football."
No. 15 Louisville will face USC in the Holiday Day at Petco Park in San Diego on Dec. 27. Before that however Brohm and his coaching staff is signing high school players and trying to navigate the the transfer portal.
"It's a busy time for sure," Brohm said. "This calendar is non-stop for the next couple weeks as we have to prepare for a bowl game and try to re-shape our roster."
The Cardinals are coming off a 16-6 loss to Florida State in the ACC title game, the team's second-straight loss. Louisville was shutdown in the fourth quarter as the Seminoles controlled the line of scrimmage.
As the calendar turns to December, the game of college football is changing with the transfer portal. Louisville has eight players in the portal and might need to rely on younger players to secure that 11th win of the season.
"I think we're gonna play the game to win like always try do and that'll be the philosophy," Brohm said. "We want to play the game to win. The roster will be slightly different.Â
Without question, you could see some younger and new guys emerge with playing time and we're definitely open to that and will gauge where they're at this month in practice."Â
The Cardinals are scheduled to begins practice on Dec. 13 in preparation for the bowl game against USC. They will need some time to get healthy, but also try to develop some of the younger players on the roster to fill in some of the holes left by departures in the portal.
"Well, we're gonna use these couple weeks to definitely do that," Brphm said. "We'll get as many game-type reps as we can without trying to get guys injured, but you know, these guys must improve.. They got to work hard to be consistent, be able to perform gain the confidence, not only myself and our coaches, but their teammates, and that's an important process. You can't do it without as meaningful reps as you can. so we will definitely use these next couple of weeks to give those people you mentioned and others. We want to get hard look at plenty of quality reps that we can to judge as much as we can."
