Roed’s Hat Trick, Jones’ Late Goal Stun No. 2 Notre Dame

Louisville advanced to the ACC Championship semifinals with a 4-3 win at Notre Dame.
Louisville (11-4-3) advances to the semifinal round of the ACC Championship for the first time since 2018 and will travel to take on fourth-seeded Clemson on Wednesday.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 advantage on Sunday night, behind heroics from Sander Roed. The junior midfielder subbed on in the 23rd minute and immediately found the back of the net. Quinton Elliot's cross was deflected to the feet of Roed, who fired a shot inside the left post on his first touch of the match.
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into the second half, where Roed struck two more times in a three-minute span.
In the 49th minute, Roed collected a deep pass from Bryce LeBel on the left side of the box, took two dribbles and slotted home his second tally of the night inside the far post.
Three minutes later, Brandon McManus played a perfect cross from the right wing that Roed headed into the net to complete the first Louisville hat trick since Mohamed Thiaw in 2017.
The three goals looked like it would be enough, but Notre Dame (11-2-4) went on the attack and started its comeback.
The Irish netted their first goal in the 66th minute and pulled to within one in the 69th minute.
The Cardinals held strong for the next 19 minutes though, still holding onto a 3-2 advantage with three minutes remaining. However, Notre Dame found the back of the net again in the 88th minute to send the match back to level.
Despite giving up a 3-0 lead, Louisville had a near-immediate answer. The Cardinals drew a foul just outside the box on the right side in the 89th minute and the set piece duo of Roed and Josh Jones combined for a moment of brilliance.
Roed sent his cross to the far post and Jones leapt into the air and headed it home to give the Cardinals the lead back.
The job wasn't done though for UofL as Notre Dame launched one last attack in the final minute. The Irish put a ball in front of goal that sat loose inside the six. A shot attempt was deflected by Alex Svetanoff as he was lying on the ground and Jones came in to clear it off the line to protect the lead.
Svetanoff would then collect a save on the last shot attempt in the closing seconds to help the Cardinals secure the victory. The redshirt-freshman made five saves on the night, including two in the final minute.
Roed finished with seven points on the night, the most by a Louisville player since George Zabaneh tallied 10 at Belmont on Oct. 16, 1999. The Norwegian recorded just the third postseason hat trick in program history, joining Colin Rolfe against Providence in the 2011 Big East Tournament and Dylan Mares versus Winthrop in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
