Cards Drop Regular Season Finale to Kentucky
November 25, 2023 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville football team suffered their second loss of the 2023 season, falling 38-31 to Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at L&N Stadium.
Despite the loss, Louisville finishes the regular season with an overall record of 10-2 for their first double-digit win total since 2013.
Quarterback Jack Plummer finished the game 24-33 passing for 242 yards and two touchdowns while completing passes to ten different receivers.
Jawhar Jordan led the way on the ground with 67 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Cardinals combined for 161 yards rushing.
After the Cardinals took a 10-7 lead into the locker room, Kentucky scored 31 second-half points on the heels of three Louisville turnovers to finish their regular season with a win.
Louisville began the second half with a 15-play drive capped off by Jordan's second touchdown of the afternoon, but the Wildcats responded immediately with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Plummer found Joey Gatewood over the middle for an 11-yard score, but the Wildcats then reeled off 17 unanswered points to take a 31-24 lead.
The Cardinals were able to capitalize off an interception from Jarvis Brownlee Jr. to even the contest when Plummer eluded pressure on fourth down and connected with Ahmari Huggins-Bruce for a 21-yard touchdown.
Kentucky was able to answer with just over a minute remaining in the game, and Louisville's last drive came up short of the end zone.
Louisville Head Coach Jeff Brohm Said:
"We didn't do enough to win. It was a disappointing loss. That is on us. Every loss is disappointing. This is disappointing. I thought we hung in there in the first half. We came out in the second half, take it down and score, give up an untouched kickoff, which is ridiculous. Then take it down and score to answer again and then give up two wide open wheel routes. A two-play drive is ridiculous. We are giving up way too many big plays on defense. Special teams need to more consistent. On offense, we can't have two fumbles that really hurt us. So, if you do those things, you are not going to win. So, we didn't deserve to win, they did. We have work to do. Now we have to go play a really, really good opponent and if we can't get those things corrected then it might not be a fun day for us. So, we have a lot of work to do this week."
