Cardinals Set to Host Crosstown Foe Bellarmine

Cardinal great Monique Reid returns as an assistant coach for the Knights
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 19/15 Louisville women's basketball team (2-0) remains at home as they are in the middle of a three-game homestand at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals are set to host crosstown foe Bellarmine (0-2) this Thursday night at Yum. The Cardinals and Knights are set to face off at 7 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
The Cardinals opened the home slate this past Sunday with an 81-74 win over DePaul this past Sunday. Louisville improved to 12-2 in home openers at the KFC Yum! Center and 15-2 in home openers during Walz's tenure.
The Cardinals overcame a first quarter deficit to take down the Blue Demons on Sunday. After trailing by 13 halfway through the first quarter, the Cardinals closed the quarter on an 18-5 run and were tied after the opening 10 minutes. In the second quarter, the Cardinals limited the Blue Demons to nine points in the second quarter and had the lead at the half.
Olivia Cochran had one of the best games of her career in the win over the Blue Demons. A day before her birthday, she scored a career-high 21 points and led the team with three assists and three steals to go with three assists. On Tuesday, Cochran was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List. Through the two games this season, Cochran leads the team in points (14.0), rebounds (7.5), assists (3.0) and steals (2.0) per game.

Bellarmine enters Thursday's matchup with the Cardinals with an 0-2 record after they began the season on a two-game west coast road trip. They opened the season with an 81-65 loss to San Jose State and are coming off a 113-64 loss to UCLA this past Sunday. Thursday's matchup will be the third of six-straight road games to begin the season for the Knights. They are coming off a 2022-23 campaign where they had a 9-22 record and were 5-13 in Atlantic Sun play. The Knights return 2023 ASUN Freshman of the Year Gracie Merkle. Last season she led the nation in field goal percentage (.702) and led the ASUN in rebounding with 11.0 per game. Merkle was named ASUN Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Preseason ASUN Team selection heading into this season. The Knights have a former Cardinal on their staff in Louisville great Monique Reid. She was just inducted into the Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame this past October. She currently ranks eighth all-time in program history for scoring and was a part of two Final Fours during her Louisville career.
Series History - This will be the 16th meeting all-time between the two schools that play in the same city and have shared a number of venues in their history. The Knights and Cardinals began playing in Louisville's first season as a varsity program and the Cardinals own a 13-2 series lead over the Knights. The Cardinals are 10-1 against the Knights in home games and this will be the fourth-straight season the two teams will face off. Last year, they played at Freedom Hall, the Knights current home and the Cardinals old home as it was their first game at Freedom Hall since the 2008-09 season.
Last Meeting (Dec. 14, 2022) - The University of Louisville women's basketball returned to a familiar venue on Wednesday night as they 73-43 in Freedom Hall. This was the Cardinals (8-4) first game in Freedom Hall since March 17, 2010, when they played their final home game in the venue before moving to the KFC Yum! Center. Defense was the story for the Cards as they limited the Knights (4-7) to just eight points in the first half, tying a program record. Chrislyn Carr added 13 points of her own and was 3-of-6 from behind the arc. It was the fifth time in the last six games she has scored in double figures and she had a team and season high seven assists. Olivia Cochran had a team-high eight rebounds, her eighth game this season with seven or more.
