Cardinals Advance with 2-1 Double Overtime Win at Pitt
November 01, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Mason Tatafu and Damien Barker John scored in the second overtime period to lift the Cards.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Behind a pair of goals in the second overtime and a career night from Alex Svetanoff in goal, the ninth-seeded University of Louisville men's soccer team advanced in the ACC Championship with a 2-1 victory at eighth-seeded Pitt on Wednesday night.
Louisville (10-4-3) advances to the quarterfinal round where it will take on top-seeded Notre Dame on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET in South Bend, Ind.
Wednesday's opening round match was a back-and-forth affair that saw no score through the first 100 minutes. Shots were even in the first half before Pitt (6-6-4) held a 9-4 advantage in the second half.
Svetanoff kept the Panthers off the scoreboard though, tallying seven saves through regulation including a pair in close late in the second half.
The first extra period saw neither side score, but the Cardinals were the first to break through in the second overtime.
Damien Barker John crossed a perfect pass to the far post in the 104th minute that Mason Tatafu slid in and put over the line for his first goal in a Louisville uniform.
Less than two minutes later, Barker John collected a turnover in the defensive half before spotting the Pitt keeper out of the goal. The sophomore then launched a shot from just behind the midfield stripe that lofted over the goalkeeper and into the right side of the net to double Louisville's advantage.
The goal was the team-leading ninth of the season for Barker John.
Pitt wouldn't go quietly, however. The Panthers responded with a goal of their own just 30 seconds later to make it a one-goal contest once again, and the Cardinals received a red card in a scrum following the goal that would leave them a man down for the final four-plus minutes.
Pitt got three more shots off and its 10th corner of the night, but Svetanoff and the Cardinals held onto the lead to secure the victory.
Svetanoff matched his career high with seven saves in regulation before adding one more in each overtime period.
