The Cards put Day 2 to Rest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville concluded its second day of fall camp on Thursday morning in the sweltering heat and sun.
The Cardinals practiced for approximately two hours in shorts and helmets before they get ready to put on shoulder pads for the first time on Friday morning.
"That's probably one of the best I've seen since I've been here.," safety Josh Minkins said of the team's attitude and talent in the secondary. "From the back end, we took strides in the secondary. I think we're getting better and we're playing a lot of different people and different players are making plays out there. The offense is making plays out there too, but from defensive standpoint, I think we are making a lot of strides."
A local product from Ballard High, Minkins has had to wait his turn in the secondary, but the 2022 season could be the year he sees more consistent playing time.
He came on toward the end of the year, finishing with 17 tackles and recording his first interception at Louisville.
"I feel more prepared this year," Minkins said. I was able to have more meetings as defense and it's starting to come together for me. We're all in one meeting room, so we're all on one page and are more comfortable with each other."
M.J. Griffin, a transfer from Temple, is also out there competing and gives the Cardinals added depth at the safety position. After recording 65 tackles for the Owls last season, the native of Ypsilanti, Mich., joined the Cards in the spring and has made an immediate impact.
"Honestly, the competition is crazy," Griffin said. "We have a lot of great athletes and have the versatility to move around. We have a lot of people who are fast, and the competition every day … you must bring it every single day. If you don't, it's going to show, I just think the competition is really, really good right now. It gets everybody better every day."
The Cardinals added a new secondary coach in the spring in Wesley McGriff, who has brought a lot of experience and knowledge to the back end of the defense. He joined the Cards after serving one season at Florida.
"He's a great coach," Griffin said. He wants you to bring it 100 percent every day. He's going to make sure that you do. You are going to feel it sometimes, He is the type of coach that wants you to succeed. He wants you to be great and he's not going to want you to be short on any of that."
The Cardinals added a lot of experience through the transfer portal, especially in the secondary, in the spring, and the talent has been on display through the first two days of practice.
"It's only day two, but my impression is very good," Griffin said. Everybody can fly around and run around. They can do all these things on the field. It's very exciting to see what we have and it's going to be very exciting to see what we can do this season."
