ABOUT THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals enter the 2022 season after posting a 10-7-1 record last fall and capturing the ACC Atlantic Division title for the first time in program history. Louisville also reached the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in the last 15 seasons.
John Michael Hayden begins his fourth season at the helm of the Louisville program and features a veteran bunch in 2022. Louisville returns nine starters from the 2021 team along with 80 percent of its goal scoring.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville and Saint Louis are opening the season against each other for the second straight year. The Cardinals are 5-14-0 all-time against SLU after dropping a 2-1 decision in double overtime last August. The two sides have split the last six meetings, alternating wins and losses, with all six being decided by one goal.
VETERAN GROUP LEADS LOUISVILLE INTO 2022 CAMPAIGN
John Michael Hayden's third season at the helm of the Louisville program resulted in a 10-7-1 overall record and the program's first ACC Atlantic Division championship.
However, eight of Louisville's 11 regular starters were freshmen or sophomores. Therefore, Hayden welcomes a veteran experienced group in 2022 that returns nine starters, all of which logged more than 1,000 minutes last fall.
The Cards returning production includes 32 of 40 (80 percent) goals, 23 of 33 (69.7 percent) assists, 87 of 113 (77 percent) points and 156 of 192 (81.3 percent) starts.
CAMARA ONE OF NATION'S BEST GOAL SCORERS
Junior forward Aboubacar Camara has been one of the country's best goal scorers throughout his collegiate career.
He led all ACC goal scorers during the 2021 spring season with five tallies in six matches and then finished 10th nationally with 13 goals last fall. Camara's scoring prowess was efficient as well, as his 50 shot attempts were the third-fewest among the 14 players to score 13 goals last season.
Camara enters the 2022 campaign as the top returning goal scorer among Power Five schools and needs just one goal to move into the top 10 all-time at Louisville for career goals.
LOUISVILLE FEATURED HIGH-POWERED ATTACK IN 2021
On their way to winning the ACC Atlantic Division title, the Cardinals had one of the nation's top offensive attacks.
Louisville ranked 13th nationally and second in the ACC at 2.22 goals per match and netted 40 goals for the first time since 2011.
Aboubacar Camara led the Cardinals with 13 goals, but 12 different players found the back of the net, 11 of which return in 2022.
UOFL OPPONENTS AMONG TOP SCORING TEAMS IN 2021
While the Cardinals ranked as one of the top offensive sides in 2021, many of their 2022 opponents did as well. Eight of Louisville's 16 opponents this fall ranked inside the top 15 in total goals one year ago.
Notre Dame, Pitt, Saint Louis and UNC Greensboro all tied for third nationally with 52 goals, while Clemson (seventh), Seattle (11th), Duke (14th) and Wake Forest (14th) all finished with at least 43 tallies.
CARDS PICKED THIRD IN ATLANTIC IN ACC PRESEASON POLL
Louisville was picked to finish third in the Atlantic Division in the ACC Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Cardinals received 47 overall points, slotting in third behind Clemson (64) and Wake Forest (55). Syracuse (33), Boston College (28) and NC State (19) rounded out the rest of the Atlantic Division.
Pitt (57) narrowly edged out North Carolina (52) for the top spot in the Coastal Division. Notre Dame (44), Duke (38), Virginia Tech (34) and Virginia (21) filled out the division.
DANQUAH NAMED TO ACC PRESEASON WATCH LIST
Junior midfielder Eric Danquah was the Louisville representative on the ACC Preseason Watch List.
Danquah was one of four Cardinals to start all 18 matches last season and logged more than 1,300 minutes on the pitch in his sophomore campaign. As a facilitator in the midfield, the Ghana native was third on the team with four assists.
CARDINALS SCHEDULE FILLED WITH RANKED OPPONENTS
Louisville opens up the regular season against 10th-ranked Saint Louis, kicking off a loaded 2022 schedule.
The Cards' slate features eight matches against teams that played in last season's NCAA Tournament, seven of which captured a conference championship in 2021.
Louisville will square off against seven of the top 15 teams in the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings - No. 1 Clemson, No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 7 Pitt, No. 8 Kentucky, No. 10 Saint Louis, No. 12 Duke and No. 15 Wake Forest, while having played No. 13 Indiana in a preseason exhibition.
