
Jorge Contreras Wins Puerto Rico National Shot Put Title

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico – University of Louisville track and field athlete Jorge Contreras won the men's shot put national title with a mark of 17.98m (59-0) at the FAPUR National Championship on Saturday, held at the Basilio Rodriguez Stadium in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

"It is exciting to see the growth that Jorge has made this season," said head coach Dale Cowper. "He has been able to make significant progress in the throwing ring and weight room throughout the year. His top throws and improved consistency shows that his efforts are paying off."

FAPUR, which stands for Puerto Rican Athletics Federation, is the governing body for athletics in Puerto Rico.

Prior to the national meet, Contreras recorded a personal-best shot put of 18.28m (59-11.75) for 21st at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round. The Caguas, Puerto Rico native was one of four Louisville athletes to qualify in two events in Bloomington, where he also placed 33rd in the discus throw with a mark of 51.60m (169-3). The redshirt sophomore earned second-team honors with a mark of 17.70m (58-1) for eighth in the shot put and achieved a personal-best discus throw of 53.81m (176-6) for ninth at the ACC Championships. Contreras entered the postseason with a top-four shot put finish in all five regular season meets and four total runner-up finishes, two each in the shot put and discus throw.
