Leon Qualifies for 2022 World Athletics Championships

Gabriela Leon led the University of Louisville contingent in the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships with a mark of 4.60m (15-1) and a fourth-place finish in the women's pole vault and has qualified for entry to the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

Leon was initially listed as an alternate for the upcoming world championships, but with the withdrawal of Alina McDonald, who placed second in the event, the recent Louisville graduate is now slated to compete in the event which will take place July 15-24 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Team USA will formally announce its roster on July 5.

Fresh off her 2022 NCAA outdoor pole vault title, Leon cleared bars of 4.35m (14-3.25), 4.50m (14-9) and 4.60m (15-1) - each on her first attempt to garner a fourth place showing. With her most recent efforts added to her already impressive results, the Grand Rapids, Michigan native currently stands at No. 27 in the World Athletics Women's Pole Vault rankings, meeting the entry standard to compete in the World Championships.

• In other 2022 USATF Outdoor Championship action, Sterling Warner-Savage finished fifth in his heat with a time of 10.27, narrowly missing the semifinal round with the final qualifier clocking in at 10.25.
• In the men's high jump, Trey Allen cleared a height of 2.17m (7-1.5) for a ninth-place finish.
• Competing in the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships, Ty McPhail cleared 4.90 (16-0.75) to place sixth in the men's pole vault.
