Cards place 11 on ACC Academic Teams
GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Louisville track and field athlete Gabriela Leon was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year to headline 11 Cardinals who were selected to the All-ACC Academic Team as announced by the league office Friday.
Joining Leon among the women selected are Soledad Jean, Synclair Savage, Emily Scott, Auriane Viola and Aliyah Welter. For the men, Paul Kallenberg, Ty McPhail, Luke Nichols, Sean Roth and Adar Sheere earned All-ACC Academic Team honors.
The ACC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year honor caps an impressive collegiate career for Leon, who became the program's first women's outdoor national champion when she cleared 4.60m (15' 1") to win the pole vault at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships. With the mark, Leon became the fourth-ever collegiate women's pole vaulter with three clearances of 4.60m (15' 1") and the only one this season with three over 4.57m (15' 0").
Additionally, Leon captured her second straight ACC women's outdoor pole vault title and was named ACC Women's Field Performer of the Week three times in 2022. She also recorded a first-place finish in seven of eight outdoor meets including seven straight wins since the season opener. Earlier in the season, Leon set the outdoor school record of 4.61m (15' 1") at the Clark Wood Invitational.
She went on to earn USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Southeast Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year honors and was recently tabbed the ACC Women's Outdoor Field Performer of the Year.
An ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and a five-time Louisville Dean's Scholar, Leon graduated from Louisville with a degree in Exercise Science and a career GPA of 3.83. She earned a 4.0 GPA in both the fall and spring semesters of the most recent academic year. Leon also a 2022 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar of the Year recipient by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
About the ACC Academic Awards
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
