
USC Transfer Setter Raquel Lazaro to Join Cardinal Roster

Lazaro will join the Cards this summer
Raquel Lázaro, a senior setter from USC, has transferred to join the volleyball team at the University of Louisville.

Last year, Lázaro played in 88 sets for the Women of Troy enroute to the 15-15 record and 10-10 in the Pac-12. She had 19 kills, hitting .421 and recorded 458 assists. She had a team-high 27 aces and notched 17 blocks.

As a junior in 2020, Lázaro started and played in 13 matches and appeared in 54 sets and led the team with 522 assists. She ranked third in the Pac-12 with 9.67 assists per set and produced seven double-doubles with seven double-digit digs matches including a season-high 17 digs at California. She finished with 26 blocks, 17 kills, and 15 service aces and was named to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team.

As a sophomore in 2019, Lázaro received Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention honors and was named to the AVCA All-Pacific South honorable mention as well as being named to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. Ranking third in the Pac-12  she led the team with 10.77 assists per set and led the Pac-12 with 20 double-doubles. She reached double-digit digs in 20 matches including recording a season-high 20 digs at Arizona State. She finished season with 1,424 assists which is ranked sixth in USC single-season history), 111 blocks (0.84 bps), 64 kills (0.48 kps), 353 digs (2.67 dps), and 22 service aces. She started all 32 matches and was the only Trojan to play in all 132 sets.

As a freshman in 2018, Lázaro  was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and received AVCA All-America honorable mention honors. Volleyball Magazine named her to the All-Freshman First Team and Volleyball Magazine All-America honorable mention. She was chosen for AVCA All-Pacific South Region Team and received Pac-12 All-Freshman status and honorable mention on the Pac-12 All-Conference team. Named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week four times (Aug. 27, Sept. 3, Sept. 24, Oct. 15), she was voted to each of three non-conference all-tournament teams. She tied for team-high with 12 double-double matches and started all 33 matches and played in all 125 sets as a freshman to lead the team with 1,402 assists (the sixth-highest single-season total in school history). Her 11.22 aps average ranked third in the Pac-12… totaled 305 digs (2.44 dps), 88 blocks (0.70 bps), and 28 service aces (0.22 saps) to rank third on the team in each category… registered career highs of 59 assists (vs. Arizona State, Oct. 12) and 22 digs (vs. Creighton, Aug. 25).

In high school, Lázaro attended Instituto Educación Secundaria (IES) Castilla in Soria, Spain. She is a seven-year member of the Spanish National Team and was named MVP of the 2015 Canary Island Championship and was chosen Best Setter at the 2017 Venza U18 tournament. She helped win two Spanish National Championship gold medals: in 2016 with CVB Barça and in 2015 with JAV Olimpico and won four silver medals. She appeared in over 25 U16 and I18 international matches with the Spanish National Team and played in eight matches at the 2017 European League Championships with Spain's Senior National Team.
