
Cardinals Set for ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field team opens postseason competition with a return to Blacksburg, Va. for the 2022 ACC Indoor Championships, Feb 24-26 at Rector Field House.

"We expect to see season best performances across the board this weekend," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Our teams have been training at a very high level and the team synergy has grown throughout the indoor season. With multiple athletes in contention for ACC event titles and NCAA qualification, we are looking forward to a great competition in Blacksburg."

The three-day meet kicks off Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles, followed by the heptathlon 60-meter as well as the men's and women's distance medley races to round out four events on initial day. The heptathlon 60-meter hurdles resume action Friday at 10:00 a.m., with track preliminaries to follow throughout the afternoon before the men's 5000-meter closes out events at 7:20 p.m. The final day of competition opens with the men's shot put at 12:00 p.m. and concludes with the women's 4x400 meter relay at 4:50 p.m.

Admission and parking are free for spectators. ACC Network Extra will provide coverage throughout the meet and live results will be provided through Flash Results for those not in attendance. The top-three finishers in each individual event and the top relay team will earn All-ACC first-team honors. The athletes who finish fourth through sixth in their respective event, and the second and third place relay team will receive All-ACC second-team distinction. ACC season awards will be determined by a coaches' vote following the completion of the NCAA Championship and will be announced in late March.

In the latest installment of the USTFCCCA's ACC Track and Field Rating Index, the Cardinals are ranked eighth on the men's side and tenth on the women's side heading into the conference meet. The Cardinals are chasing their first ACC Indoor Championship since joining in 2015; the women's top-finish came in 2018 when the team placed 3rd, while the men earned a top-finish of fifth in 2017.

The Cardinals currently have three athletes with NCAA Championships qualification in Gabriela Leon, Sterling Warner-Savage, and Trey Allen with multiple more anticipating on entering the top-16 distinction with their performances this week. Leon is ranked fifth in the women's pole vault with a school record height of 4.42m (14-6), which she set at the Hokie Invitational in Rector Field House on Jan. 21. The 2020 NCAA Indoor All-American and six-time All-ACC Indoor honoree has earned a top-five pole vault finish at all four ACC Indoor Championships she has competed in.

Warner-Savage enters the week seventh in the men's 60-meter after posting a meet-best and indoor school record time of 6.55 seconds at the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb.11. The 2021 NCAA Indoor All-American and two-time All-ACC Indoor honoree earned a third-place finish in the event at the 2021 ACC Championships. Allen is set to compete in the men's high jump after setting a personal-best height of 2.20m (7-2.5) to earn his team-high third event win at the Alex Wilson Invitational last weekend. The latest mark moved the two-time All-ACC Indoor honoree from 19th nationally to ninth entering the weekend.
