December 14, 2022 | Softball
Former University of Louisville associate head softball coach Carol Bruggeman will be inducted into the 2023 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame as announced by the organization at its annual coaches convention.
Â
Bruggeman, who is the NFCA Executive Director, served as Louisville's associate head coach from the 2006 season through the 2014 campaign.
Â
In her time at Louisville, Bruggeman helped guide the Cardinals to 378 wins, four conference championships (three BIG EAST, one American Athletic Conference) and nine straight NCAA appearances. During her tenure at UofL, the Cards produced 54 All-BIG EAST selections, five American All-Conference honorees, 17 All-Region team members, eight All-Americans and three conference Player or Pitchers of the Year.
Â
The Cards reached several milestones during Bruggeman's tenure on the coaching staff including tying program highs in the national coaches polls, appearing at No. 7 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and No. 8 in the USA Today/NFCA poll. That same year, the Cardinals started the season on a 28-0 game win streak. Bruggeman was an integral member of the 2012 BIG EAST and NFCA Great Lakes Region Coaching Staffs of the Year after leading the Cards to a program-best 55-5 record. Louisville captured the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles and earned the overall No. 15 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Â
In 2013, Louisville notched its first victory over a top-ranked team when it defeated No. 1 Oklahoma 5-1 in Norman and remained one of only four teams to beat the eventual national champion. The Cardinals went on to earn the No. 15 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and served as a regional host for the second straight year.
Â
Bruggeman joined the NFCA full-time as Associate Executive Director in September 2014. She will be inducted into the organization's hall of fame in December 2023. Florida State head coach Lonni Alameda, retired Moravian University head coach John Byrne and longtime Rowan University head coach Kim Wilson are among Bruggeman's fellow 2023 inductees.
