Cardinals Fall 4-3 to No. 20 UCF in First Round of ITA Kickoff Weekend

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Louisville battled, but fell short in a 4-3 decision against host No. 20 UCF in the first round of the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend at the USTA National Campus on Sunday.
The Cardinals (2-3) will take on Tulane in the consolation match Monday at 10 a.m. The Green Wave fell 4-0 to No. 14 Stanford on Sunday afternoon.
"This team is coming together and competing hard," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "The season is young and I am happy with the progress from the last the matches. We will get back to work tomorrow."
UCF (1-2) earned the first point of the match with doubles wins on courts 1 and 2, but not before the Cardinals picked up a win at the No. 3 spot where Josh Howard-Tripp and Tin Chen defeated Alan Rubio and Kento Yamada 6-0. The Golden Knights answered at the top seed as Lleyton Cronje and Bogdan Pavel topped Etienne Donnet and Natan Rodrigues 6-1. UCF claimed the doubles point with Trey Hilderbrand and Cooper White's 6-1 win against Alex Wesbrooks and Sergio Hernandez at No. 2.
In singles action, UCF added to its lead when Cronje defeated Chen 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Rodrigues picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win against Kento Yamada on court 4 to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Louisville kept the momentum on court 5 when Hernandez bested Pavel 6-3, 6-4 to even the score at 2-2.
The Golden Knights countered with a victory at the two-spot when Rugio topped Howard-Tripp 6-3, 6-4. Mizrahi tied the match once again when he beat White 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6.
With the scored knotted at 3-3, the final point of the match came down to court 1 where Donnet registered a 6-2 win over 16th-ranked Hilderbrand, but the Golden Knight took the second set 6-2 to move to a decisive third set which saw UCF prefail 6-3 to seal the win.
