Hughes Finishes Sixth in 3000m Steeplechase at Tokyo Olympics

Former NCAA champion Matt Hughes achieves Canada's best Olympic finish in the 3000m steeplechase
Former University of Louisville track and field standout Matt Hughes finished sixth the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, marking the best-ever finish for a Canadian in the event. Competing in his second Olympic steeplechase final, the Canadian record holder clocked in at 8:16:03.
He qualified for the final after posting a time of 8:13.56 to finish fourth in his heat.
The Oshawa, Ontario native who placed 10th in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, also achieved Canada's previous best result in the event.
Hughes competed for the Cardinals from 2008-11 and became the first Louisville athlete to win an outdoor national title in 2010 when he captured the 3,000m steeplechase crown at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He then repeated in 2011, winning the event in 8:24.87 which still stands as the school outdoor record.
Hughes was also a three-time BIG EAST champion, winning the steeplechase in 2010 and 2011 and the 5000m run.

He graduated from UofL in 2012 with a degree in Health and Human Performance.
