Brewer Excited About Cards' Wide Receivers Heading Into 2021 Season
Â
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- The University of Louisville's wide receivers have been known for their talent, depth and versatility since head coach Scott Satterfield arrived.
Â
Despite the lack of in-game experience, wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer has been pleased with the changeability of his receivers and sees potential heading into the 2021 season.
Â
"We call it position flexibility. We want to be able to play inside and outside, but we're going to play to their strengths too." Brewer said. "Obviously, with lack of experience, we would like guys who have played before, to put in a game when somebody gets shook up a little bit, to get them in the game and get that other guy settled down."
Â
One of the players who will put that versatility on display is senior Shai Werts, who is transitioning from quarterback to wide receiver.
Â
"He played quarterback, he can play running back, he can play slot receiver, he can play outside. He's now learned our offense, and we're trying to see where he fits." Brewer said of Werts. "He's had a good camp thus far, he's got some maturity, and he's also got those game experiences, although in another position, it doesn't matter."
Â
The speed of sophomore Tyler Harrell and freshman Ahmari Huggins-Bruce have also stood out to Brewer during camp.
Â
"Tyler is a young guy who's been in the program and it's his time to shine. He obviously can run fast straight ahead and we're developing him as a route runner. He can take the top off with that kind of speed, 4.2-type speed is rare." Brewer said. "Ahmari is a guy whose exhibited a lot of speed and quickness. He's kind of like Tutu (Atwell)'s size as far as his height and his weight, and actually he's heavier than Tutu, but he's more of that frame guy."
Â
Brewer said he would like to develop eight players for the 2021 season and acknowledged that it may be wide receiver by committee to start the season.
Â
"I would say early on, especially first three games, that it will be by committee for sure." Brewer said. "Keeping some guys fresh, using their skill sets, especially young guys, or guys maybe you haven't seen as much, to see what they can do and then we'll figure out where they fit from there."
