Cardinals Set for the First Round of the NCAA Championship
May 27, 2021 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The University of men's golf team is set to compete in its fifth NCAA Golf Championship on Friday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., when the Cardinals tee off at 10:05 a.m. EST.
The Cardinals enter the championship as the No. 23 seed after their strong finish last week at the Noblesville Regional. The Cardinals will be paired with Georgia Tech and Sam Houston State.
The Cardinals finished fourth at the Sagamore Golf Club, putting it all together at the right time of the season. It was their fourth top four finish of the spring.
The championship will be contested over 72 holes of stroke play, with the field being cut from 30 to 15 after 54 holes. Following 72 holes, the field will be narrowed down to eight teams who will square off in a quarterfinal, semifinal and final match to determine a national champion.
First-year Head coach Ryan Blagg, who has advanced to five-straight national championship between his time at Baylor and Louisville, likes the way his team is trending heading into Friday's first round.
"I think we are playing well at the right time," Blagg said. "I liked the way we went out last week and played our most consistent rounds of golf this year. I've been to five straight of these and I never take it for granted. I'm looking forward to getting out there on a great golf course and competing."
The Cardinals shot a 4-under-par last Wednesday to finish in fourth place and advance to the golf championships for the fifth time in school history and the first time since 2019.
Beginning play firmly in fourth place, the Cardinals shot 284 to close the regional at 10-under-par, five shots ahead of fifth place UAB. Texas, Tennessee, and North Carolina were the other three schools to advance to the national championships.
The Cardinals will travel six players, including Matthias Schmid, who recently qualified for the US Open this week by finishing in the top 10 at the Dallas qualifier. Schmid is the top player for the Cardinals with his 72.15 stroke average, followed by Jiri Zuska, who posted a top-10 finish at the regional last week. John Murphy, Trevor Johnson, Max Kennedy, and Devin Morley round out the top six.
Spectators are permitted based on local/state guidelines, which are subject to change. It is requested that spectators wear masks and follow physical distancing protocols, including remaining at least 15 yards away from student-athletes, coaches and other team personnel. Spectators must also keep distanced from tee boxes and greens. The event is free of charge.
