NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – It wasn't the most ideal conditions to make an NCAA Regional debut, but for University of Louisville freshman Max Kennedy, he used the circumstances to his advantage during the first round of the Noblesville Regional at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.
Despite playing in a steady rain, Kennedy shot a season best 3-under-par 69 to sit one shot off the lead heading into Tuesday's second round. The Cardinals are in a good position after carding an even-par 288 to sit in fifth place just six shots behind Texas, which shot a 6-under-par 282. Tennessee, North Florida and North Carolina are each tied for second after firing a 3-under-par 285.
"We fought hard on a tough weather day today," UofL head coach Ryan Blagg said. "It was great to see Max go out and post a great score for the team in his first regional championship appearance. Regionals is definitely not a sprint it's more like a marathon and we are right in position where we need to be."
Even though play was delayed for an hour due to heavy rains, it didn't stop Kennedy from excelling in his first postseason appearance. In only his fourth career event, the rookie is one shot behind Texas' Travis Vick, who holds the lead at 4-under-par after 18 holes.
Kennedy didn't waste any time jumping on the leader board, recording a birdie on No. 12 and sank a short putt on No. 14 to record the first eagle of the regional.
"I did a lot well today," Kennedy said. I didn't do anything spectacular just plotted my way around the course well, didn't make any silly mistakes and stayed disciplined throughout the round. Hopefully we can get out there tomorrow and post a low one."
Coming up on the final hole at No. 9, Kennedy, whose view was obstructed by a hill, knocked a shot on the green for another birdie to shoot 69 in the rain.
Trevor Johnson is tied for 17th after carding an even-par 72. The fifth-year senior shot a 1-under-par on the front nine after recording a 1-over on the back. He registered back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14, and also birdied No. 1 for the highlights of his round.
Matthias Schmid is tied for 26th after shooting a 1-over-par 73. He played under par for most of the round, but a triple bogey on No. 4 derailed what was looking like a solid day for the senior. He was 1-under after 13 holes until knocking his tee shot on the 14th into an unplayable lie.
Jiri Zuska is tied for 33rd place after firing a 2-over-par 74 and John Murphy is tied for 41 after his 3-over 75.
The Cardinals tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning and will be paired with North Carolina and North Carolina-Wilmington.
