NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – University of Louisville head men's golf coach Ryan Blagg thought if the weather improved from Monday that the Cardinals could post a big day during the second round of action.
Well, the first-year coach looked like a genius because that's exactly what happened during the second round of the NCAA Noblesville Regional at the Sagamore Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Cardinals posted the second-best round of the day to close the second round in fourth place – three shots ahead of fifth place North Florida and 12 shots in front of sixth place North Carolina-Wilmington.
The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Golf Championships at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 28-31.
After rain soaked the golf course on Monday, the weather calmed down on Tuesday, and the Cardinals took advantage. UofL shot a 6-under-par 282, recording 22 birdies and one eagle on the day to improve by one spot from Mondays fifth place closing. Texas posted the best round at 9-under-par.
"It was good weather today," Blagg said. "It was out there for sure. It was good to see John Murphy, Matthias Schmid and Jiri Zuska put it together today. I know Trevor Johnson was a little disappointed, but shooting even par was a good round."
It was Blagg's initial goal to win the regional, and the Cardinals have a chance to accomplish such a feat. Texas holds a nine-shot lead over the Cardinals, but Louisville is just two shots behind Tennessee for second and a shot behind third place North Carolina.
"We're right where we need to be," Blagg said. "My goal was to win this regional. That's our goal tomorrow is to win the day. If we do that, we will be fine."
Three Cardinals shot under par in Zuska, Schmid and Murphy, combining to shoot 6-under-par.
Zuska was the top player for the Cardinals on Tuesday, carding a 3-under-par 69 to move into a tie for 12th place for the regional.
The native of the Czech Republic recorded back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 and recorded the shot of the tournament on No. 7 when he registered an eagle with a 60-foot-putt.
"I did a good job of hitting the ball into the right spots," Zuska said. I wasn't making any mistakes out there and I was putting well. We're in great shape right now. If we can continue to hit it in the right spots, we will be fine on Wednesday."
After shooting an opening round 75, Murphy responded by shooting a 2-under-par 70 to move into a tie for 28th over the two-day span. The fifth-year senior registered four birdies for the round, including three on the front nine to sit at 1-over-par the regional.
Schmid, who shot a 1-over-par 73 on Monday, was steady again on Tuesday, registering six birdies to shoot a 1-under-par 71 for the round and move to even-par over the two days.
Trevor Johnson moved into the top 20 by shooting an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 19th place. The senior shot 2-under on the back nine to help the Cardinals gain momentum during the round. Max Kennedy is also tied for 28th after shooting 75 on Tuesday.
The Cardinals will tee off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, looking for their fifth appearance to the NCAA Championships.
