March 23, 2021 | Men's Basketball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville forward/center Malik Williams announced on Saturday that he would be returning for another season with Cardinals in 2021-22.
Today, he spoke with media about that decision, his relationship with his teammates, his injuries and more. The link to the 23-minute interview is available here.
Williams played in just three games this season due to injuries. He missed UofL's first 15 games after having surgery Nov. 11 to repair a broken bone in his right foot. He made his season debut at North Carolina on Feb. 20, contributing four points and three rebounds.
Team co-captain and the most experienced returnee for the Cardinals this season, Williams started his first game of the year against Notre Dame, totaling six points, two assists and 10 rebounds, marking his 10th career double-digit rebounding effort. He started at Duke on Feb. 27, scoring five points and grabbing five rebounds in 19 minutes of action before leaving with a foot injury that would end his season.
The runner-up in the 2019-20 ACC Sixth Man of the Year voting, Williams has scored in double figures 23 times for his career and has grabbed five or more rebounds in 47 career games. He has amassed 604 career points and 444 rebounds. He scored nine or more points in 15 of his last 22 games as a junior in 2019-20. He pulled down five or more rebounds in 16 of his last 22 games, including a season-high matching 13 rebounds with 14 points against Syracuse on Feb. 19 for his fifth career double-double.
The 6-11, 245-pound forward/center from Ft. Wayne, Ind., was 19th in the ACC in rebounding, averaging 6.1 per game, and averaged 8.5 points. He averaged 5.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in three partial games in 2020-21.
