
Jorge Contreras Earns Personal Best at 2021 Junior Pan American Games

CALI, Columbia. – University of Louisville track and field athlete Jorge Contreras earned a new personal-best shot put throw of 17.73m (58' 2") in a fourth-place finish Wednesday at the inaugural 2021 Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia.
Contreras recorded a mark of 17.65m (57' 11") on his first throw of the final round before surpassing the mark two attempts later. The redshirt sophomore set his collegiate best heave of 17.51m (57' 5.5") at the 2021 Clark Wood Invitational.
Contreras will compete for Puerto Rico in the discus throw on Dec. 4, where he has another opportunity to qualify for the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games.
The Caguas, Puerto Rico native took home the silver medal in the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games in the discus throw and participated in the 2018 U20 World Championships, where he set the national junior record in shot put and discus throw.
In his first season as a Cardinal, Contreras tallied four-top 10 indoor finishes in the shot put and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary Round in the discus throw after setting his personal-best throw of 53.05m / 174' 0" at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
