October 19, 2021 | Baseball
The Yankees won five of the seven games in the annual series.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball program's annual Pizza Bowl series concluded on Tuesday with an 8-5 victory for Vrable's Yankees at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Yankees captured the seven-game series with a victory in game six on Saturday, but added another win to the tally on Tuesday.
After a quick top of the first inning, the Yankees got to work offensively in the bottom half. Chris Seng tripled to leadoff the frame and scored on a Noah Smith single. Drake Westcott made it a crooked number on the scoreboard with a two-run double later in the inning. Smith added another RBI single in the second and Logan Beard drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Will Cook brought Snider's White Sox back within two in the third with a two-run single with the bases loaded and Tyeler Hawkins picked up a RBI in the fourth to make it a 5-4 contest.
The Yankees added single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh though, including a solo home run off the bat of JT Benson.
Seng led the way offensively with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate. Smith, Benson and Austin Bode each tallied multiple hits as well for the Yankees. Christian Knapczyk turned in the lone multi-hit game for the White Sox.
Riley Phillips allowed a single run across two innings, striking out four in a start. Jared Poland pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and Will Koger closed out the contest with two scoreless.
J.R. Langworthy, Tate Kuehner and Cook all worked scoreless innings for the White Sox.
Tuesday's game wrapped up the 2021 Pizza Bowl and fall season for the University of Louisville baseball program.
ABOUT THE PIZZA BOWL
Upon his hiring as Louisville head coach in the summer of 2006, Dan McDonnell immediately created an atmosphere of competition throughout the Cardinals baseball program. Whether it's through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell creates competitive situations to give his players numerous opportunities to prepare for what they will see during conference and postseason games.
One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following approximately six weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra-competitive three-game or five-game intra-squad series. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans.
