Vrable’s Yankees Clinch Pizza Bowl with 10-6 Victory
October 16, 2021 | Baseball
The White Sox win the series 4-2 with game seven to be played Tuesday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Vrable's Yankees used a seventh inning rally to tally a 10-6 victory in the University of Louisville baseball program's annual Pizza Bowl Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The win clinches the series for the Yankees, who won four of the six games. The series will wrap up on Tuesday with game seven scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
Snider's White Sox appeared to force a decisive game seven, leading 6-4 heading into the seventh inning. However, the Yankees offense had a late comeback in them.
Dalton Rushing singled and Ben Metzinger walked with one out before a fielder's choice loaded the bases. Logan Beard drew a walk to force home a run and Isaac Humphrey tied the game with a hard hit ball on the infield.
The Yankees pulled in front on a sacrifice fly from Chris Seng and Drake Westcott then put the game out of reach with a three-run homer to right.
Rushing was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Yankees, who got hits from seven different players. Christian Knapczyk, Levi Usher, Brandon Anderson and Tyeler Hawkins each had multiple hits on the other side.
Seamus Barrett pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in a start for the White Sox, striking out five. Evan Webster struck out two in his 1.2 innings without allowing a run.
Braden Calise entered with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and pitched out of the jam before the Yankees handed the ball off to Michael Prosecky to close out the final two frames.
ABOUT THE PIZZA BOWL
Upon his hiring as Louisville head coach in the summer of 2006, Dan McDonnell immediately created an atmosphere of competition throughout the Cardinals baseball program. Whether it's through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell creates competitive situations to give his players numerous opportunities to prepare for what they will see during conference and postseason games.
One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following approximately six weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra-competitive three-game or five-game intra-squad series. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans.
