May 28, 2020 | Men's Golf, Academic Services
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's golfer Matthias Schmid has been named a 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar as announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.
Schmid is considered one of the top players in the country, earning PING honorable mention accolades this season.
The preseason All-American posted the second-best stroke average on the team at 69.91, which also ranked in the top 25 nationally. The native of Germany finished a season best second at the Bearcat Invitational after shooting a 14-under-par, the second-best total of his career.
The junior fired a one-round score of 67 to finish third at the Dorado Beach Invitational and shot 6-under-par at the Old Town Club Intercollegiate to tie for seventh.
Schmid is one of four starters returning to the Cardinals for the 2020-21 season.
As the name denotes, the annual Ashe edition is a part of our quarter-century legacy of recognizing outstanding minority young men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits.
In addition to their athletic ability, students named 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, be at least a sophomore academically, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
