Catching Up with Caitlin Ferguson
April 09, 2020 | Softball
With the 2020 season unexpectedly ended due to COVID-19, we are checking in with members of the team as they adjust to taking classes online while navigating time spent away from campus in what would normally be the middle of their season. Up next in the series is senior shortstop Caitlin Ferguson.
Â
The Versailles, Ky., native is a four-year starter and a 2018 NFCA All-Region selection and 2017 ACC all-freshmen team member. After spending her first two seasons at third base, she has anchored the shortstop position the past two years. When the 2020 season was halted, Ferguson stood second on the team with two home runs and had driven in seven RBIs.

Q&A
What was your reaction when you found out that your season had ended?
At first, I was in complete shock, I didn't know how to react. I was with Celene (Funke), (Taylor) Roby and Carmyn (Greenwood) when we got the notification from the NCAA and we all were in shock. As it began to settle in that I could have played my last softball game, I began to feel sad and anxious because the game that I've grown up playing could have just been taken from me. I've pretty much had those same feelings this entire time because there are so many unknowns.
Â
What is your daily schedule like these days, have you developed a routine?
I still set an alarm every day to maintain good sleep habits. I wake up and workout before I eat breakfast. After breakfast, I either study or do homework so I can have the rest of the day to either go hit, fish or kayak. I've been trying to keep myself really busy to distract myself from the possibility that I may never play softball again.
Â
What do you do in your downtime?
Usually I like to fish. It has always given me a peace that nothing else can.
Â
How are you communicating with teammates, coaches, etc.?
I have texted teammates just catching up and I've been in good consistent contact with my coaches as well. We also have a weekly video chat with the whole team.
Â
What words of support or encouragement would you send fellow student-athletes?
Just try to always look at the good in whatever situation you are in. And always learn from the bad things that happen to you because they happen for a reason. Also, NEVER take a game for granted because it very well could be your last.
Â
Are you doing any sorts of workouts from home?
Yes, with my bachelor's of exercise science, I have a wide variety of knowledge to know how to train without having the same resources that I have on campus.
Â
What do you like best (or miss) about Louisville?
I miss being able to see my teammates every day. We take it for granted, but being on a team is something so special and something that you can't replace with anything.
Â
How do you think your friends would describe you?
Maybe a little uptight, but I just like for things to work and see hard work pay off.
Â
If you could see anyone in concert, who would it be?
Luke Combs
Â
What are some of the top moments/favorite memories from your career so far?
Winning the series against Florida state.
Â
If you could play any sport other than softball, what would it be?
Basketball
Â
Do you have a favorite "binge" show or series that you are watching?
The Ranch
Â
What is your favorite quote, saying or motto?
