Cardinals Cap First Tournament at Purdue

Cards win 16 singles and nine doubles matches over the weekend.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Louisville women's tennis team had 16 singles and nine doubles victories at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. over the weekend.

In the Purdue Singles Draw, Raven Neely picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win over Luisa Pelayo of Wright State, before beatcing Alina Kuzmenkova of DePaul 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in the semi-finals but did not play in the championship as her teammate Nikolina Jovic had advanced to the finals from the other side of the bracket. Jovic beat Anja Trbeznik of Lipscomb 7-5, 6-2 and Nathalia Wolf Gasparin of Purdue 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

In the Boilermaker Singles Draw, Maia Haumuller  beat Eastern Michigan's Emma-Lou Pommiers 6-2. 6-2 before beating Rebecca Herrington of Ball State 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 but fell to Purdue's Alex Sabe 6-1, 7-6 (4).

In the Boiler Up Draw, Diana Wong beat Christy Robinson of Northern Illinois 6-3, 6-3 and then advanced to beat Ioanna Tsadari of Bowling Green 7-6, (3), 6-3. Wong won the bracket with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mackenzie Myers of Miami (OH).

In the Hammer Down Singles Draw, Dina Chaika beat Vasavi Ganesan  of Eastern Michigan 6-3, 6-2. She then fell to Purdue's Zala Dovnik. Dovnik's teammate Zeynep Ozturk was the other finalist so they played each other's runner up. Chaika beat Ozturk 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Cardinal Rhea Verma beat Emma Zakordoniec of Lipscomb 6-3, 6-3 and then beat Maharita Tavpash of Bowling Green 6-2, 7-5. In the final,  Verma knocked off Ball State's Jessica Braun 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-1.

In the Purdue Black Singles Draw, Jelena Vujanic beat Lipscomb's Liza Diachenko 6-2, 6-1 and then advanced to beat Marie Mayerova of Eastern Michigan (6-3, 6-1). In the championship final, she beat Nikol Dobrilova of Purdue 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In the Gold Doubles Draw, Raven Neely and Dina Chaika had a first round bye and then beat Ball State's Victoria Sec and Amy Kaplan of Ball State 8-6. Their next victims were Alexia Coutino and Ioana Guna of Cincinnati, who fell 8-6 but then the Cardinals duo fell to UofL teammates Maia Haumuller and Rhea Verma 8-6 in the finals. Haumiller and Verma beat Anja Trbexnik and Maddox Bandy of Lipscomb 8-0 before downing Andreea Craciun and Luisa Pelayo 8-3. In the semi-finals, Haumuller and Verma beat Nathalia Gasparin and Nikol Dobrilova of Purdue 8-4.

In the Black Doubles Draw, the Louisville pair of Diana Wong and Jelena Vujanic had a bye in the first round andthen beat Jovana Peric and Julia Dmitrieva of Northern Illinios 8-2. The Cards then fell to Marharita Tavpash and Marta Bettinelli 8-0. In the third place match, Wong and Vujanic fell 8-6 to Alex Sabe and Zala Donvik 8-6.
