
Nwora Scores 10 for Nigeria in World Cup Opener

WUHAN, China – University of Louisville forward Jordan Nwora totaled 10 points and four rebounds as Nigeria fell 82-77 to Russia in the first game of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup Group B contest at the Wuhan Sports Centre in Wuhan, China.
Nwora added two assists and one steal while connecting on 2-of-5 three-point goals. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Josh Okogie led Nigeria with 18 points.
Nigeria will face Argentina in its next game of the international tournament group phase on Monday, Sept. 2 at 4:30 a.m. ET. Nigeria will then play Korea on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m. in its final first round Group B game. Fans can follow the tournament online here and watch games on ESPN+.
A 6-8 rising junior from Buffalo, N.Y., Nwora (pronounced WOR-uh; silent N) has dual citizenship with Nigeria. His father Alex, who is the head coach at Erie Community College, serves as the head coach of the Nigerian team. Nwora, a preseason first-team All-America selection by Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook, played three games for the Nigeria national team in the 2018 FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers on June 29-July 1, 2018, scoring a Nigerian record 36 points against Mali in the event.
Honored as the 2019 ACC Most Improved Player, Nwora was the third-most improved scorer in the nation last season with his 17.0 scoring average (sixth in the ACC), up 11.3 points per game from his 5.7 average as a freshman. The All-ACC third team selection was one of five players in the ACC who scored 20 or more points on at least 13 occasions last season.
An exercise science major who was named to the All-ACC Academic men's basketball team, Nwora scored in double figures in 31 of 34 games and produced nine double-doubles last season. He was UofL's leader in scoring and rebounding (7.7 rpg, ninth in the ACC) last season and made at least three three-pointers on 16 occasions.
The USA's World Cup team, which features former Cardinal guard Donovan Mitchell, is in Group E for the event. The FIBA Basketball World Cup championship will be decided on Sept. 15 in Beijing's Wukesong Sport Arena.
