Cards Place Five on All-ACC Academic Softball Team

Hensley, Melton, Funke, Watson, Chung earn All-ACC Academic Team honors
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team placed five student-athletes on the 2019 All-ACC Academic Team as announced by the league office Wednesday. Rebecca Chung, Celene Funke, Megan Hensley, Sidney Melton and Danielle Watson represent the Cardinals. The five selections are tied for the most in the conference along with Florida State.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

Hensley (Ashland, Ky.) picks up her third straight all-ACC academic nod. The pitcher/utility player
is also three-time National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) all-region honoree. As a senior, she led the Cardinals with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs as well as a .640 slugging percentage and a .431 on-base percentage. Additionally, she carried a 9-4 record in the circle with a team-best four shutouts to go along with 91 strikeouts in 107.2 innings of work. She finished her career ranked among the top 10 in several Louisville career hitting and pitching categories. Hensley graduated in May with a degree exercise science. Â

Melton, a redshirt senior from Columbus, Ohio, picks up her fourth ACC Academic Team selection. Â The two-time all-ACC honoree led the team with a .338 batting average and a school-record 35 stolen bases. She also stood second on the squad with 47 runs and third with a career-best 37 RBIs. Melton recently graduated with a degree in exercise science and is a two-time Google Academic All-District selection.

Funke, (Carmel, Ind.) finished her junior season with a team-best 48 runs and stood second with a .324 batting average and 29 stolen bases. Additionally, the speedy centerfielder led the nation and holds Louisville's single-season record with 13 triples. The two-time Google Cloud Academic All-American earned her bachelor's degree in finance in May 2019 and carries a 4.0 cumulative GPA.

Watson (Osceola, Ind.) tallied 12 wins in the circle and led the Cardinals with 164 strikeouts in 161.0 innings of work. The exercise science major tossed a complete game in Louisville's NCAA Regional win over No. 17/16 Northwestern and earned ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors this season.

Chung, a catcher from Torrance, Calif., was an ACC All-Freshmen team selection, registered a.266 batting average, drove in 35 RBIs and stood second on the team with six home runs. The political science major also set a school record with four runners caught stealing in the series-clinching 10-9 win against Florida State.

In 2019, the UofL softball team amassed a 35-23 overall record, earned an at-large bid to the 2019 NCAA tournament and reached the finals of the Evanston Regional.
