Setting the Stage
Cardinals and Hurricanes Square Off in Key ACC Contest
-Â Â Â Â A matchup of two first-year head coaches awaits when the University of Louisville visits Miami Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
-Â Â Â UofL head coach Scott Satterfield has the Cardinals at 5-3 in his first season, while Manny Diaz owns a 5-4 mark in his first year leading the Hurricanes after a 27-10 win over rival Florida State on Saturday.
-Â Â Â Louisville's first appearance in Miami since 2004 also marks the first meeting between the Cardinals and Hurricanes since the 2014 season opener, and the Cardinals' first Atlantic Coast Conference game in school history. Louisville dropped the Hurricanes 31-13 on a Monday night at Cardinal Stadium.
-Â Â Â The Hurricanes own a 9-3-1 series advantage, but the Cardinals have won the last three meetings. Louisville is 0-5-1 all-time against Miami on the road.
-   In a memorable Thursday night nationally televised game in 2004, the Cardinals nearly upset third-ranked Miami 41-38 in the Orange Bowl in their last visit to face the Hurricanes on the road. Louisville opened up a 24-7 lead at the half before Miami scored 34 second-half points, including 20 in the fourth quarter to hand the Cardinals their only loss on the season.
- Â Â Â With four games remaining, head coach Scott Satterfield is looking to match Bobby Petrino for the most wins by a first year coach. Petrino, who's first season was 2003, directed the Cardinals to a 9-4 record, which ended with a 49-28 loss to Miami (Ohio) in the GMAC Bowl.
-Â Â Â Satterfield's 5-3 start is the best for a coach in his first season since Petrino led the Cardinals to a 7-1 record in 2003. Satterfield became the first coach in school history to defeat a ranked opponent when the Cardinals knocked off No. 19 Wake Forest on Oct. 12 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
-Â Â Â The Cardinals are looking to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2017 and the 18th year in the last 22 seasons. The Cardinals missed a bowl last year for the first time since 2009.
-Â Â Â Satterfield is 1-0 when his teams are coming off a bye week after a 41-39 win at home versus Boston College on Oct. 5.
-Â Â Â Louisville is 1-1 on the road this season, with a loss at Florida State on Sept. 21 and a win over No. 19 Wake Forest on Oct. 12. The Cardinals also won a neutral-site contest versus Western Kentucky on Sept. 14 in Nashville, Tenn.
-Â Â Â Quarterback Micale Cunningham doesn't have enough passing attempts to qualify for some of the national statistics, but if he did, the redshirt sophomore would tie with Ohio State's Justin Fields for fourth nationally in passing efficiency at 185.24. Cunningham is completing 62.1 percent of this passes and is averaging 18.7 yards a completion.
-   Running back Javian Hawkins picked up his fifth 100-yard rushing game versus Virginia on Oct. 26 — giving him 887 yards for the season. The native of Titusville, Fla., needs just 113 yards to become the first running back to rush for 1,000 yards since Bilal Powell ran for 1,405 yards in 2010. Lamar Jackson is the last player to reach the 1,000-yard plateau when he totaled 1,601 yards in 2017.
-Â Â Â The Cardinals have registered six interceptions over the last four games after failing to register one in their first four contests. Six different players have recorded interceptions this year, including first career interceptions by Chandler Jones, Yasir Abduallh, Russ Yeast, and Jack Fagot. Four of the picks have come in the red zone, stopping potential scoring drives by the opposition.
-Â Â Â Wide receiver Tutu Atwell is one of the top receivers nationally, catching 41 passes for 668 yards and seven scores and is on pace to become the school's first 1,000-yard receiver since Harry Douglas totaled 1,159 yards in 2007.
4Â Â Â The Cardinals rushed for 227 versus Virginia, the sixth time this season that UofL has surpassed the 200-yard total on the ground this year. The Cavaliers entered the game allowing 97.0 yards per game.
