G.G. Robinson Hoping to Follow in His Father's Footsteps
October 10, 2019 | Football
Defensive tackle G.G. Robinson hopes to fulfill his dreams of taking his game to the next level.
Many children dream of playing in the NFL someday, but growing up with a father who played in the NFL is a different story.
Â
Louisville defensive end G.G. Robinson grew up in that world. His father, Gerald, played in the NFL for 10 years. While his dad never
pushed him to pursue football, Robinson had dreams of wanting to be a better player than his father was.
"He never pushed me to do it, but I always saw his videos growing up, so I always wanted to be better than him," Robinson said.
A Lilburn, Ga., native, Robinson has been somewhat of the face of Louisville football for the past few years. His positive and cheerful personality
have consistently been something that coaches and teammates have loved about him.
While Robinson is one of the most fearsome players on the field, when not on the field he considers himself to be somewhat of a gentle giant.
And now, as a senior, he understands that he is someone that the younger players are going to gravitate towards. While he isn't always the most vocal player, he does try to lead in other ways.
"In the past, I don't feel like I've been looked upon as much of a leader. But, I'm trying to do more this year," added Robinson. "I've never been a real vocal guy, but I can lead by example, and I'm focusing on that."
Â
He leads by example by consistently putting up numbers. And the stats have come despite constantly adapting to different defensive schemes.
"It's really not a challenge anymore because I've had five defensive coordinators in five years. So, I've had a new system each year basically," said Robinson. "It's just adapting and I feel like I am a pretty smart guy. It's really all in your head. If you can maintain information and retain information, then it's easy."
The arrival of head coach Scott Satterfield and his staff not only have brought changes to offensive and defensive schemes, but to personalities and ultimately the vibe in the locker room.
"He's a real personal guy and he's literally like us," said Robinson. "On the weekends in the summer he is playing golf with the coaches. He likes going to the lake. They have fun, just like we have fun. So, it's really cool. He's chill, cracking jokes. He's just like one of us."
Defensive coordinator Bryan Brown has also had an immediate impact on Robinson and the rest of the defense.
Â
"When Coach Brown is up and excited, jumping up and down, and enthused, you don't have a choice but to be up," added Robinson.
"Everyone feeds off of Coach Brown."
Â
Robinson has been a staple on the Cardinals' defensive line for years and is approaching 40 career starts.
Â
Now a senior, he has a full allotment of goals that he is working hard to accomplish. And a goal board sits prominently in his room to consistently
remind him of those goals.
Â
His ultimate goal, "I want to be an All-ACC player." And to one day play in the NFL like his father.
