Asia Durr led the way with 24 points, while Dana Evans added 20.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's basketball (20-1, 7-1) chopped down the second-ranked Connecticut Huskies (18-2, 7-0) 78-69.
The third-ranked Cardinals led for nearly 30 minutes in front of 17,023 fans, a season-high for women's college basketball.
Senior Asia Durr dropped 24 points while sophomore Dana Evans tallied 20. The duo combined for 10 of Louisville's 11 3-pointers.
A pair of Cards in senior Sam Fuehring and junior Jazmine Jones recorded double-doubles in the top-five match-up. Fuehring recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds while Jones scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.
Head coach Jeff Walz said his squad is putting the pieces together to become a great team.
"It's not necessarily just the five best basketball players. You got to find a team who is will to accept the fact, 'If I'm not a good shooter, I'm going to be a good rebounder. I'm going to be a screener.' And that's one thing our team is starting to accept," Walz said.
UConn edged the Cardinals in the opening six minutes, but Evans' 3-pointer notched UofL's first lead at 15-13. The Huskies responded with a 6-0 run. Trading blows in the final two minutes, the first quarter ended knotted at 21.
Durr failed to score in the first quarter and opened the second quarter with a trio of treys, giving UofL an eight-point lead. Responding in typical fashion, Connecticut ripped off an 11-2 run to regain a 35-34 lead. A pair of 3-pointers, one from Evans and another by Durr, gave Louisville a 40-38 lead.
Durr cashed poured in 14 points, leading both teams. UConn stayed alive with 11 second chance points compared to Louisville's three.
UConn teetered on taking the lead in the third quarter, but the contested shots didn't fall for the Huskies. Louisville held a five-point lead midway through the quarter and back-to-back threes from Durr and Evans pushed the lead to nine.
Evans launched the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, her 14th point of the night. UConn struggled to find the basket, started 1-for-9 from the floor.
UofL held an eight-point lead during UConn's drought. Evans delivered the final blow with her fifth 3-pointer with under two minutes to play. The three put Louisville up 11, their biggest lead to that point.
The Cards iced the game at the free throw line, sealing the signature win.
Walz acknowledged the magnitude of the win, but is keeping his team's mindset level.
"We have to win on Saturday first. No one is going to care about Thursday night if you don't take care of business and come out and compete," Walz said. "I don't think I've ever been ranked No. 1 during the season … the end of the year is what we play for."
