January 18, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Louisville improves to 3-0 on the season
The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Lipscomb 5-1 in the second match of Friday's home-opening doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals (3-0) posted a 4-0 win over Butler in the first match of the day.
Â
"We knew Lipscomb was going to come out fresh," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "I said in our pre-summary of this weekend, they're a really feisty team and you saw that today, they wouldn't give up a point. Especially when they won that doubles point. They looked really, really good in doubles and we knew they would be good. They just outplayed us right there at the end, but I loved the bounce back these guys had. Our guys fought so hard in that last wave and they're fatigued, but they fought through it."
Â
The Bisons (0-1) picked up wins on doubles courts 1 and 2 to take the first point of the match. The Cards gained an early advantage when senior Federico Gomez and freshman Sergio Hernandez Ramirez beat Francesco Tacconi 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Lipscomb answered on court one were Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena, No. 57 in the ITA doubles rankings, topped senior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and freshman Fabien Salle 6-4. The first point of the match was decided on court two which featured a battle between Louisville's Brandon Lancaster and Alex Wesbrooks and Lipscomb's Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe. The Cardinal duo evened the score after being down 6-5, to force a tiebreaker, but the Bison's prevailed 7-6.
Â
Ramirez Hernandez put the Cards on the scoreboard in singles when he beat Tacconi 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Lancaster, No. 104 in the ITA singles rankings topped Caffarena 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot to push Louisville ahead 2-1. Gomez increased the lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Uribe at the four-spot. The match was decided on court three where Salle defeated ORgegon 6-3 in the first set and prevailed 7-6 (7-2) in the second. Moments later, freshman David Mizrahi wrapped up a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 decision against David Skrabut to complete the 5-1 win.
