Wasike wins the honor after winning her second straight race this weekend
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The USTFCCCA national office announced on Monday that junior Dorcas Wasike has been named the Division I Women's Performer of the Week for the week of Sept. 17.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 10 collegiate cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and two NJCAA divisions).
Wasike won her second consecutive race on Saturday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic. In the women's 5K, Wasike outran the competition with a time of 17:09.4. She bested runner-up Purity Sanga of Tennessee Tech by 11.7 seconds.
Wasike becomes the first athlete from the University of Louisville to be named National Athlete of the Week in cross country.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
