May 22, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Morin-Kougoucheff will open singles play Wednesday, and team with Parker Wynn in doubles Thursday
The University of Louisville's Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn are set to open the NCAA Men's Tennis Division I Championships at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Â
Morin-Kougoucheff will face Tennessee Tech's 66th-ranked Eduardo Mena in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Division I Singles Championship Wednesday at 12 p.m. The junior will join teammate sophomore Parker Wynn as the 18th-ranked duo takes on the tournament's top-seeded and No. 1-ranked pair of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic from Mississippi State Thursday at a time to be announced later.
Â
"Chris knows his opponent through fall national tournaments and also we have played Tennessee Tech in the past," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Eduardo Mena made it to the quarterfinals of the prestigious All-American Championships. Chris knows high level competition playing No. 1 singles in the ACC. It should be a great match."
Â
"Parker and Chris have a great opportunity to play the overall No. 1 seed," said Ecarma. "An unseeded doubles team won it last year. It is all about getting hot at the right time and these guys have put in a lot of work to prepare for this."
Â
Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff (NCAA Singles)
Morin-Kougoucheff was selected as an alternate for the NCAA singles tournament and earned a spot in the 64-player field. The Capbreton, France native, who was tabbed at No. 69 in the latest ITA singles rankings, has been recognized in the national rankings seven times throughout the season, reaching as high as No. 53. The two-time All-ACC second team selection compiled a 19-10 overall record with a 13-5 mark at No. 1 in dual match play. He becomes the ninth NCAA singles selection in program history and only the third player to qualify in both singles and doubles.
Â
Morin-Kougoucheff/Parker Wynn (NCAA Doubles)
Morin-Kougoucheff and Wynn (North Richland Hills, Texas) have appeared in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Doubles Rankings all 11 weeks they were eligible, reaching as high as No. 6 at the conclusion of the fall tournament season. Currently, they are ranked No. 18 in the standings, which were released on May 3. The duo compiled an overall record of 27-10 and are 15-5 at No. 1 in dual match play. The duo has registered a 6-3 record against other nationally ranked opponents and earned ACC Doubles Team of the Week after defeating defending national champion Virginia on March 2.
Â
With their at-large bid, Morin-Kougoucheff and Wynn become the eighth doubles team in program history to be selected for the NCAA Championships. Wynn will be making his second consecutive doubles tournament appearance after receiving an at-large bid alongside Sean Donohue, the Cardinals first since 2011.
