Morin-Kougoucheff Falls in NCAA Singles Championship
May 23, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Junior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff fell 6-4, 6-3 to Tennessee Tech's Eduardo Mena in the NCAA first round
The University of Louisville's Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff fell 6-4, 6-3 to Tennessee Tech's Eduardo Mena in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Division I Championships at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Â
"Chris was playing pretty good in the first set," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "At 4-4, Mena hit a couple of really good shots and closed out the first set. In the second set at 2-3, Chris won four straight points to make it 3-3. Mena then fires back with some good serves and clutch play to take the match. He showed why he was a quarterfinalist in the All-American Championships. It was a high quality match that Chris will learn from in his first NCAA Championships experience. I am still very proud of him."
Â
Morin-Kougoucheff finishes his junior season with a 19-11 overall singles record and ranked No. 69 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings. The Capbreton, France native earned his second straight All-ACC nod after posting a 13-5 mark in dual matches, including a 7-3 showing against conference opponents while playing mostly at No. 1. He appeared in the national singles rankings seven times during the 2017-18 season and reached as high as No. 53 on April 17.
Â
He will return to action Thursday when he teams with sophomore Parker Wynn as the 18th-ranked Cardinals take on top-ranked, and the overall No. 1 seed Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic from Mississippi State.
