Henderson ends career at Louisville with a runner-up finish in the shot put
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Four Cardinals competed in day one of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday. Emmonnie Henderson led the pack with a second place finish in the women's shot put.
"We had some great performances today at the NCAA Championships and we also missed a couple of opportunities," said head coach Dale Cowper. "This is arguably the most competitive track and field competition outside of the Olympic Games and World Championships and I'm proud of the way our student-athletes showed up to represented UofL."
Henderson wrapped up her collegiate career as a national runner-up with a throw of 17.77m/58'3 ¾" for first team All-American honors. She finished four spots higher than her sixth place performance at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
"I can't say enough about the way Emmonnie competed tonight," said Cowper. "Throughout her career she has done so much to help our program and she stepped up big again today with a runner-up finish in the women's shot put."
Teammate Holly Hankenson earned second team All-American honors at her second trip to the championship in College Station with a 13th place finish in the pentathlon with 4,000 points.
Sophomore Alexis Gibbons made her first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championship and earned second team All-American honors. Her jump of 5.85m/19'2 ½" was good enough for 15th place.
"Holly Hankenson and Alexis Gibbons were each able to earn second team all-american honors and Joe Delgado has set himself up for a strong second day of competition in the heptathlon," Cowper said.
Joe Delgado sits in 13th place with 3,140 points after four events on day one of the men's heptathlon. Tomorrow he will wrap up competition with the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000 meter run.
Joining Delgado on day two of competition will be Jerin Allen and Javen Reeves in the men's high jump as well as Makenli Forrest in the women's weight throw.
