Snow Fall Disrupts First Day of Spring Football Practice

The Cardinals worked out for over two hours on Tuesday afternoon as snow fell in the Louisville area.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It certainly didn't feel like the first day of spring practice for the University of Louisville football team.
With snow covering the UofL campus on the first day of spring, the weather forced the Cardinals inside for their two-hour workout as the Cardinals opened their ninth season under head coach Bobby Petrino.
"The good thing about it here we have an indoor practice facility," offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway said. "It was good to be able to go inside and to walk outside and see it snowing. It was nice and dry in the indoor facility."
Working out in shorts and helmets, the Cardinals were able to get out on the field to work in a lot of new faces, one which included a new starting quarterback in redshirt sophomore Jawon Pass.
After sitting behind Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, it was Pass' first practice as a starter. The Columbus, Ga. native appeared in six games last season, throwing for 238 yards and two touchdowns in limited action, but it's now his turn to take over the huddle.
"The biggest thing about the new quarterback is that he's been here for two years," Galloway said. "He's been able to sit in meetings and get as many reps as Lamar did. We have all the confidence in the world in him and know he can lead the team."
A highly touted prospect, Pass knows that it's his team now after taking over for Jackson, who is arguably the best player to play at Louisville and one of the best ever to play the position in college.
"I learned a lot playing behind Lamar," Pass said. "I'm just glad to be in this position. It's a lot different being the starter compared to being a back-up. I just have to get a better chemistry with the team now that I'm the starter this spring."
With a lot of new faces on offense, the offensive line is the biggest constant heading into the start of spring drills. Despite Geron Christian leaving early for the National Football League, the Cardinals return five players who saw action in the starting lineup a year ago.
"We have competition up-and-down the line," offensive line coach Mike Summers said. "We have guys that we can mix in at different positions. We will finds the five best guys to put into the lineup.Everyone is competing for a job, and that's what makes spring practice so good. I'm excited about where we are at this point and I thought it was a good first day.
Summers, who is in his sixth season with the Cardinals, is pleased with the physical development he saw in his unit after the first day of practice.
"We have guys who changed their bodies," Summers said. "Senior Lukayus McNeil had a tremendous offseason. Mekhi Becton had great offseason, gaining strength and getting their bodies in shape. Kenny Thomas and Cole Bentley did a great job in the weight room. We're pleased at where they guys are starting out."
The Cardinals will return to the field for the second practice of the spring on Wednesday afternoon at 3:50 p.m.
