Cardinals defeat Governors in non-conference finale
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In their non-conference finale, the University of Louisville women's tennis team continued one of the best starts in program history with a 6-1 victory over Austin Peay Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (12-1, 2-0 ACC) faced a tough test from the short-handed Governors (1-5), but strong play from the back end of the lineup helped seal their sixth-consecutive triumph.
"I'm happy with it. We're 12-1 right now," said head coach Mark Beckham. "I really complain of too much as far as our level of play."
In doubles, Aleksandra Mally and Ariana Rodriguez opened the match up with a 6-0 win at second position, followed by the point-clinching 6-2 win from Sena Suswam and Raven Neely at No. 1. The No. 3 match was awarded to Louisville by forfeit as Austin Peay did not have enough players.
With only five singles matchups, the Cards needed just two wins to take the contest and would quickly find them. Maya Smith and Raven Neely cemented the victory with wins of 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 respectively. After Austin Peay earned a win at No. 1, Abbie Pahz added to the lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at second position. In the final matchup at No. 3, Tiffany Huber overcame a first-set loss to prevail 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
Louisville will now turn its attention to Atlantic Coast Conference play, which begins in full next weekend at No. 12 Georgia Tech. The Cardinals and Yellow Jackets will square off on Sunday, March 4 at noon in Atlanta.
