Cards face EKU and Austin Peay in Friday doubleheader
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In their final non-conference matches before Atlantic Coast Conference play begins in full, the University of Louisville women's tennis team entertains Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 23 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals (10-1, 2-0 ACC) will open with the Colonels (4-3) at 10 a.m., followed by the Governors (1-4) at 4 p.m.
Last weekend, the Cards followed a strong start to ACC play with a pair of home wins over Marshall and Furman. On Friday, the Cards quickly put away a short-handed Thundering Herd squad in a 5-0 win. Sunday's 6-1 victory against Furman proved to be a tougher contest, as the Paladins took one match and pushed three others to a deciding set.
Eastern Kentucky has opened the season with solid performances, defeating Miami (Ohio), 4-3, before dropping a tough 4-3 match last weekend to Cincinnati. Coach Rob Oertel's team is led by senior Laura Argente, who has won six consecutive matches and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week last week. In the last matchup between Louisville and EKU, the Cardinals prevailed 6-1 on March 6, 2016 in Richmond, Ky.
Coach Ross Brown's Austin Peay squad has only won once this season, but they have been competitive with consecutive 4-3 losses against Central Arkansas and Dayton in recent outings. Despite the team's struggles, three Governors have posted double-digits wins in singles, led by junior Lidia Yanes Garcia's 4-0 at first position in the regular season. In the last matchup between the schools, Louisville topped Austin Peay, 6-1, on Jan. 28, 2012 at Bass-Rudd.
Live stats of both matches will be available on GoCards.com, followed by recaps of each contest.
