Louisville junior completes historic season with top conference honor
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday morning that University of Louisville junior Dorcas Wasike has been named the 2018 ACC Women's Runner of the Year. She is the first Cardinals runner to earn the ACC's top postseason performer accolade.
The Kitale, Kenya native posted a historic 2018 campaign, earning five victories and placing in the top 15 of all seven starts. At the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisc., Wasike placed 14th in the championship 6K with a time of 20:08.2, earning USTFCCCA All-American status for the second-consecutive season. Prior to the NCAA meet, she took first at both the NCAA Southeast Regional and ACC Championships, earning Louisville's first championship as an ACC member. In the regional 6K, her time of 19:42.1 set both a personal and Winthrop University course record.
"This award speaks for itself. We are proud of Dorcas, and she has earned the right to be called the top cross country runner in the ACC," said head coach Dale Cowper.
Earlier in the season, Wasike earned victories at the Tennessee Dual, Vanderbilt Commodore Classic and Louisville Cross Country Classic, setting a personal 5K record in the home meet. Additionally, she finished third overall at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in October. Tuesday's announcement adds to a bevy of honors this season, including placement on the All-Region and All-ACC teams, four ACC Women's Performer of the Week awards, and the program's first USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Women's Athlete of the Year.
In other ACC accolades, Virginia Tech's Peter Seufer was named Men's Runner of the Year, while Notre Dame's Matt Sparks was named Men's Coach of the Year and NC State's Laurie Henes earned Women's Coach of the Year.
