Louisville's second exhibition contest of 2018-19 season will be against a second team from within the city as the Cardinals face the Simmons College of Kentucky Falcons on Saturday in the KFC Yum! Center. UofL won its first game against outside competition, prevailing 71-60 against Bellarmine, the nation's top-ranked NCAA Division II team by the DII Basketball Bulletin. The Cardinals limited the Knights -- a team that returned eight of its top 10 scorers and ranked second in the nation in field goal percentage last season (.530) -- to 34.6 percent accuracy from the field.
Â
UofL, which posted a 22-14 record last season, is entering a new era under the direction of Coach Chris Mack, who guided Xavier to a 215-97 record and eight NCAA Tournament appearances in nine seasons. While the Cardinals return eight letterman from last year's unit, junior V.J. King is the Cardinals' lone returning starter. King was a starter at shooting guard in all 36 games for the Cardinals last season, scoring in double figures in 14 games, including seven of the last 16 and nine of the last 20.
Â
Louisville returns 39 percent of its scoring from its 2017-18 squad (1074 of 2721 points), 36 percent of its rebounding (478 of 1316), 35 percent of its assists (169 of 489) and 43 percent of the total minutes played (3133 of 7300).
Â
Coached by former UofL guard and assistant coach Jerry Eaves, the Falcons posted a 4-17 record in NCCAA Division II (National Christian College Athletic Association). Eaves was a starting guard on the Cards' 1980 NCAA Championship team and scored 1,250 career points at UofL. After a five-year NBA playing career, Eaves was an assistant coach at Howard (1990–94), New Jersey Nets (1994–96), Louisville (1996–99), Charlotte Hornets (1999–2002), and Cleveland Cavaliers (2002–03), before serving as head coach at North Carolina A&T for nine seasons (2003-12).
Â
Simmons assistant coach Butch Beard was an All-America selection as a senior at UofL and scored 1,580 career points in his three-year career (1966-69) with the Cardinals. The Simmons roster includes nine players from the state of Kentucky, including six from Louisville. The 2006–07 season was the first time since 1930 that the school sponsored an athletic program. The two campuses are separated by less than three miles.
