Matthew Fung will join the Cardinals in the fall of 2019
University of Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma has announced that Matthew Fung has signed a National-Letter-of-Intent to continue his playing career with the Cardinals.
Â
"One of Louisville Athletics motto is being 'humble and hungry' and this describes Matthew Fung perfectly," said Ecarma. "He is an intelligent and pragmatic on and off the court. He is one of the three signees whose parent is also his coach. One of the reasons he chose UofL I believe is that the similarities in coaching style that his father and I have. Matthew was very well-received here during his recruiting trip and felt he would fit right in. He is very coachable and is known for his singles play, but his doubles game is really developing. He reminds me of former Cardinal standout Chris Simich, but also has the court speed of current player, Clement Filho. I am excited about coaching him for four years."
Â
Fung comes to Louisville from Miami, Florida, and played an instrumental role in Miami Palmetto Senior High School's state championship run. He holds a 5-star rating according to tennisrecruiting.net and is ranked No. 39 nationally in the class of 2019.
Â
Some of his career highlights include eight singles wins in the prestigious USA Clay Courts SuperNationals where he advanced to the semifinals of the consolation draw. He was reached the singles finals of the Florida Level 4 tournament in Daytona and the Florida Level 5 tournaement in North Miami.
Â
"I chose Louisville because I wanted to be challenged on the tennis court and in the classroom," said Fung. "I also wanted to play in the ACC Conference and I will experience all these things at the University of Louisville."
