Wasike Named Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year

Junior runner becomes Louisville's first female winner
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville junior Dorcas Wasike was named the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Southeast Regional Women's Athlete of the Year Tuesday afternoon by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Wasike is the first Louisville female athlete to be named Regional Athlete of the Year.
The Kitale, Kenya native has posted five victories this season, including the ACC and NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. At the regional meet last Friday in Rock Hill, S.C., she turned in a personal-best and course-record 6K time of 19:42.1, earning All-Region honors and automatically qualifying for her second-consecutive NCAA Championships appearance.
Earlier in the season, she became Louisville's first ACC champion with a time of 20:08.1, taking first by over eight seconds. She also finished third overall at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in October and set a personal 5K record in her win at the Louisville Cross Country Classic. Wasike won four ACC Women's Performer of the Week accolades this season, earning the award every time she was nominated.
Wasike will compete for Louisville's first cross country national championship this Saturday at the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisc. She will run in the women's championship 6K at 11:45 a.m. on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
