Cherif Dieye scores fourth goal of the season for Louisville, which loses on penalty kick in 92nd minute
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - No. 15 Notre Dame converted a penalty kick in the 92nd minute to register a 2-1 overtime victory against the sixth-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
After the two teams were even through 90 minutes, the host Fighting Irish (7-3-1, 3-1-0 ACC) took advantage of a foul inside the box by the Cardinals (6-2-2, 3-1-1 ACC) to register the win. Louisville's Ziyad Fekri was whistled for the foul after taking down Notre Dame's Thomas Ueland at the 91:48 mark of the match. Sean MacLeod followed by scoring on the penalty kick for the game-clinching goal.
The result ended the six-match unbeaten streak for the Cardinals, who suffered their first loss since September 4. Saturday's match marked the second straight overtime match for Louisville and the third overall this season.
Cherif Dieye delivered his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Cardinals. With his squad facing a deficit, the junior from Dakar, Senegal connected on the equalizer in the 48th minute when he scored inside the far right post from 12 yards out for his 11th career goal. Tate Schmitt earned his fifth assist of the season and Kino Ryosuke added his third assist as they teamed to find Dieye for the goal chance.
Notre Dame opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Ueland corralled a looping pass inside the box and scored inside the right post from six yards for his third goal of the season. Jack Lynn was credited with the assist.
The Fighting Irish finished with a 15-12 advantage in shots, while shots on goal were even at six for each side. Notre Dame also finished with a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.
Up next, the No. 6 Cardinals begin a four-match homestand with a non-conference tilt against Georgia Southern on Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
