Cards undefeated in doubles, win three singles matches Saturday
The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up five wins on day two of the Florida Gulf Coast Collegiate Open Saturday at Bonita Bay Club.
Â
The Cardinals opened the day with a perfect doubles showing against the host Eagles. Junior Fredrik Moe and freshman Fabien Salle teamed to beat Marcelo Tebet and Juan MOntex 6-4 while junior Clement Filho and freshman Alex Wesbrooks defeated Nicolas Tibaudin and Javier Fernancez 6-2.
Â
In singles action, Salle topped Florida Gulf Coasts's Felipe Ramirez 6-3, 6-3. Moe beat Tibaudin 6-1, 6-3 and Filho wrapped up the Cardinal victories by outlasting Feliksas Sakalauskas 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 in a marathon match.
Â
"I just witnessed one of the gutsiest matches in years," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "While losing a long first set 6-7, then saving two match points to win the second set 7-6, Clement was cramping and hobbling around the court in pain early in the third set. At 2-1, Alex, Fred and Fabien started feeding him teaspoons of mustard, pickles, and a banana. His teammates did that each of the next four changeovers. They willed him to keep on fighting no matter what and encouraged him at every opportunity. Clement found a way to play for an hour through the cramps on won 7-6 in the third on center court. Seeing teammates carry their hurting friend like that is the reason why I coach-truly unforgettable! It capped off a big day winning five of six matches."
Â
The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
