Quentin Snider is a second-year captain.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville seniors Anas Mahmoud, Quentin Snider and junior Deng Adel have been named as tri-captains for the Cardinals' 2017-18 basketball team, as announced today by UofL Head Coach Rick Pitino.
"The players and coaches each had a vote," Pitino said. "I was pleasantly surprised that Anas received the most votes, followed by Quentin and Deng. All three will give us great leadership this year and they all have great experience. We're a young team in certain areas, but we're experienced in others. It should be a great mix."
A 2017 All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball team selection, Mahmoud started 15 games last season as the Cardinals posted a 25-9 record, tied for second in the ACC and produced a No. 10 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. A 7-0 center from Cairo, Egypt, he was second in the ACC and 38th in the nation in blocked shots (2.10 bpg) last year while leading the Cardinals in field goal percentage (.623). Mahmoud averaged 5.7 points and 4.0 rebounds as a junior, blocking a shot in 29 of his 31 games.
In his second year as a team captain, Snider is the Cardinals' top returning scorer (12.4 ppg) for the third consecutive season. He enters his senior year needing 216 points to become the Cardinals' 68th career 1,000-point scorer. An All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball team selection for three years, the 6-2 guard from Louisville was second in the ACC in assists-to-turnovers ratio (2.74; 22nd in the NCAA). Snider was eighth in the ACC in assists (4.1) last season and hit 30-of-63 three-pointers in his 11 ACC games (.476).
Adel was the Cardinals' primary starter at small forward as a sophomore when he averaged 12.1 points, 4.5 assists, and made 44 3-point goals. An All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball team selection each of the last two years, Adel scored in double digits in 22 games. The 6-foot-7 forward from Melbourne, Australia, was the Cards' scoring leader over the last six games of the season, averaging 16.3 points, shooting 54 percent from the field (35-of-65), and scoring at least 16 points in five of the six.
